Modern-Era Semifinalists For Class of 2017 Named
Four first-year eligible candidates – safety Brian Dawkins, defensive end Jason Taylor, running back LaDainian Tomlinson and wide receiver Hines Ward – are among the 26 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2017.
Although Hall of Fame bylaws call for the selection of 25 semifinalists they also provide that the semifinalist list includes all ties for the twenty-fifth position, as has occurred this year.
One other player, guard-tackle Chris Hinton, although previously eligible for the Hall, is a semifinalist for the first time. All other individuals on the 2017 list have been a semifinalist in previous years. The group of semifinalists includes 24 players (15 on offense, 8 on defense and 1 special teams) and two coaches.
The year-round selection process is integral in fulfilling the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Mission to Honor the Heroes of the Game, Preserve its History, Promote its Values and Celebrate Excellence EVERYWHERE.
The following is the complete list of 2017 Modern-Era semifinalists, including their positions, years of participation and teams. Also listed are the number of times and years that each individual has been named a semifinalist since this reduction vote was added to the Selection Committee Bylaws in 2004.

To be considered for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a nominated player or coach must not have participated as an active player or coach for five consecutive seasons.
The list of semifinalists was reduced from an initial group of 94 nominees. The next step in the selection process comes in January when the semifinalists are trimmed to 15 Modern-Era Finalists. That list increases to 18 finalists with the inclusion of the recommended nominees of the Hall of Fame’s Contributors and Seniors Committees. The 2017 Senior Finalist is Kenny Easley (S – 1981-87 Seattle Seahawks). The 2017 Contributor Finalists are Dallas Cowboys Owner, President & General Manager Jerry Jones (1989-present) and former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue (1989-2006).
Easley, Jones and Tagliabue will be voted on separately and, like all other finalists, must receive 80% positive vote from the full Selection Committee at the annual selection meeting on Saturday, February 4, 2017 in Houston, the day before Super Bowl LI.
Although there is no set number of enshrinees for any Hall of Fame Class, the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s current bylaws stipulate that between four and eight new members will be selected each year. No more than five Modern-Era Finalists can be elected in a given year. Therefore, a class of six, seven, or eight can only be achieved if one or more of the Contributor and Senior Finalists are elected.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2017 will be announced during “NFL Honors,” a two-hour primetime awards special to air nationally on the eve of the Super Bowl from 8-10 p.m. (ET and PT) on FOX. “NFL Honors” will be taped earlier that evening at the Wortham Theater in Houston from 7-9 p.m. (ET) when the 2017 Hall of Fame class will be introduced for the first time. In addition, the NFL and The Associated Press will announce their annual accolades in this awards show with the winners on hand to accept their awards.
The Class of 2017 will be officially enshrined in Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio next August as the main event of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Annual Enshrinement Week.
