When Sterling Sharpe departed the University of South Carolina as a two-time All-American and the Gamecocks’ all-time pass receiving and touchdown leader, the first-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers successfully transitioned from the college game to the NFL and to the challenging game conditions often experienced in Green Bay.
During his seven seasons as a Packer, Sharpe achieved league-leading status in a number of categories and kept the team’s record historians occupied.
In his second season in the NFL (1989) Sharpe led the league in single-season receptions with 90 and would again set the standard in both 1992 and 1993. During the 1992 campaign he set the NFL record at the time for catches in a season with 108 and toppled his own record by amassing 112 the following year.
In addition to the receptions title, Sharpe’s efforts in the 1992 season earned him the NFL statistical champion in receiving yards (1,461) and receiving touchdowns (13).
In 1994 he again led the NFL in receiving touchdowns with 18.
At the time of his retirement, Sharpe held seven Packers’ regular season receiving records and was tied for two additional. Sharpe also owned three Green Bay postseason records including most points in a game (18) against Detroit in 1993.
A three-time First-Team All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection, Sharpe was honored as a member of the NFL All-Decade Team of the 1990s.
